Alphen, Riel and Goirle lie in the foothills of Brabant's Kempen region, where sandy soils mean you will find heathland as well as meandering streams, forests and even marshes. The impressive Kempen Estates, with a rich cultural history, together cover over 4,000 hectares. It contains and borders around 2,000 large and smaller (wetland) nature areas and ecological connecting zones. These include the (catchment) areas of the Leij, Poppelsche Leij, Rovertsche Leij, De Utrecht and the Reusel at Wellenseind. On the Belgian side, the area borders the Molenheide, Aarlese and Poppelsche Heide and the Region Forests Ravels.
