LandStad De Baronie goes 'Cycling for my food' and launches regional products map
In Corona time, more people got out on their bikes to farms, urban gardens, or country shops nearby. To buy tasty fresh local food and also enjoy being outside in the greenery. Great! You get super fresh stuff and healthy exercise too. You get to know your surroundings better while cycling and see for yourself where your food comes from.
To make even more people aware of this, regional network LandStad De Baronie has entered into cooperation with the national initiative 'Cycling for my food'. This is a national initiative that is now running in 12 regions. And everywhere it can count on a lot of enthusiasm. And so now also in de Baronie of Breda, concerning the municipalities of Alphen-Chaam, Baarle-Nassau, Breda, Etten-Leur, Gilze en Rijen, Oosterhout, Rucphen and Zundert.
How does it work?
From De Baronie, five front cyclists, led by initiators Petra Wevers and Sjoerd Gabriel, head out into the region. Wherever they find farm shops, market stalls, country shops or stalls with regional products on their route, offering fresh food, they will stop. These tasty offerings are shared on the Cycling for my food website and on a dedicated Facebook page. "The nice thing is that anyone can join in and share information on the Facebook page about well-known, or unique unknown places where you can find that local food. Suppliers of new harvest, or leftover food can also share it on the facebook group," say the initiators.

"With the information in this facebook group, we want to link great cycling with the necessary activity: caring for our daily food. In doing so, we prefer to support local entrepreneurs, small shops, gardeners and farmers in de Baronie, who also offer their wares along the road. And especially take your (grand)children along!", the initiators stress. LandStad de Baronie thinks it is important that children learn again where their food comes from. After all, how does a carrot grow, and where does milk come from? Go and see for yourself in your neighbourhood!
Both LandStad De Baronie and Petra Wevers have spent the past period mapping out the region and establishing contacts with many dozens of entrepreneurs. This has also led to the creation of a fold-out regional product map. It shows just about all regional products, as well as the eight so-called Barony gates, tourist information points and cycle junctions. The fold-out map can be collected free of charge from the third week of July at dozens of local produce shops, VVVs, tourist information points and the Baroniepoorten.
