Gilze and Rijen municipality and its surroundings suffered greatly during World War II because of the airfield. Especially the villages of Gilze and Hulten suffered badly from air raids, as German military warehouses and hangars were located close to the built-up areas. Various cycling routes have been set out to remind you of World War II and lead you past places where war remnants can still be seen or fascinating stories can be heard.
