IVN walk Broskens and Merkske

Broskens and Merkske
The Broskens is an area of about 200 ha to the west of Baarle-Nassau. It is owned by Staatsbosbeheer. It is part of the stream valley reserve of the Merkske, one of the most beautiful stream valleys in Brabant. The Merkske is the border between the Netherlands and Belgium and has therefore retained its natural, meandering course. For centuries, this was a real marshland, which gradually became drier. In 1997, the "Restoring the Merkske" project was launched. Dutch and Flemish governments started working together to stop and reverse negative developments.

Flora and fauna
The area consists of small-scale natural and cultural landscape. Fields and woods alternate with pools, brambles and wooded banks, meadows and wet meadows. Fields do remain. Fortunately, clean seepage water still rises in some places. Deep seepage water is rich in lime, iron and other minerals. This results in unusual vegetation here and there. Bird species that have become rare elsewhere can also often be seen or heard here, so bring binoculars. In summer, various species of dragonflies and butterflies can be seen.

Shoes and provisions
The Forestry Commission has constructed a laarzenpad across the higher parts of the Broskens between the marshes. Sturdy waterproof walking shoes or boots are recommended. The trip through this special area takes longer than most other walks. So don't forget to bring some food and drink.

Registration
Registration for this walk is compulsory and can be done here. Registration is possible until the day of the walk.
