Lecture Paul Faes: Airport de Heidebloem
In the week when Dongen commemorates its liberation (77 years ago), the lecture by Paul Faes fits well. Shortly after the start of World War II, the occupying forces built Fliegerhorst Gilze-Rijen. Supporting infrastructure for this air base was built in the surrounding area. Thus, at a safe distance from the Fliegerhorst, in the woods of De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, the Germans constructed a huge ammunition depot. Today, the depot is known as the MASt. Another example of infrastructure is emergency airfield Heidebloem, which appears in the landscape between Tilburg and Dongen. Paul Faes from Tilburg conducted research on this airfield. During this lecture, the results of research into the explosive end of the MASt and the forgotten emergency airfield Heidebloem will be presented.
The Wazerweijen issue 161 also features an article written by Paul on the subject. The Wazerweijen is on sale at museum de Looierij or at Bruna.
