Landscape walk Steengroeve
Chaamse bossen
The vast Chaamse bossen are managed by Staatsbosbeheer. About a hundred years ago, there were still many moors, fens and swampy areas. Reclamation and dewatering greatly changed the character of the area: pastures and fields, but mainly production forests were created. For decades, the Chaam forests were among the driest in the area.
Nature restoration
Since the early 1990s, a lot of nature restoration has been done. The groundwater level has gradually been raised again and some fens have been restored. The area is regaining a more natural, varied appearance. Some spots are kept open and the forests become more mixed: coniferous and deciduous. This has certainly led to favourable results for flora and fauna.
Forests, mountains and fens
The walk takes you past the Ossengoor, which was once used as a meadow, but is now flooded again. Opposite the Ossengoor is a drowned forest, created by humidification of this plot. The tour continues along the historical Geuzen path, about which the guides will tell more. We walk along 't Zand with its large recreational lake. At a chapel, we ask for a blessing for the good outcome and then we start the 'tough climb' to the Alphense Bergen. After the descent, we head back into the woods on our way to the next water: the Putven, a place with many botanical peculiarities.
Landscape walk
This will be a walk for sturdy walkers. On our landscape walks, the distance is longer and the pace is faster than on our other walks. The emphasis is more on the landscape as a whole than on details. However, it is still a walk where enjoying nature is central. Count on a hike of around 20 km long. We expect to be on the road for 6 hours. Bring plenty of food and drink and be prepared for all weather conditions. Rainwear and waterproof shoes are often needed, as the Chaamse woods are often swampy these days.
Registration
Registration for this walk is compulsory and can be done here. Registration is possible until the day of the walk.
