Tree Frog Trail – IVN Mark & Donge
On Saturday 10 February, the nature guides from IVN Mark and Donge will be leading a long walk from Bavel to Gilze-Rijen Air Base and back via Dorst.
About ten years ago, there was a remnant population of tree frogs at the air base, and they are still there today. The tree frog is a small, grass-green frog with suction pads at the tips of its fingers and toes. At the end of the last century, it emerged that its range in the Netherlands had declined by eighty per cent. As a result, the tree frog was identified as one of the most critically endangered amphibians.
The species is now protected under the Nature Conservation Act. A number of organisations have joined forces to create an ecological corridor stretching from the air base to the Molenleij in Breda and via the Gilzewouwerbeek to the Chaams Broek. Along this route, small nature reserves have been established as habitats for flora and fauna, enabling animals and plants to move from one nature reserve to another.
It remains to be seen which amphibians, scrub birds and small mammals the nature guides from IVN Mark and Donge will encounter. No tree frogs – it’s still too cold for them.
