In Brabant, no fewer than 23 towns and villages have a Peperstraat or a toponym referring to 'pepper'. Actor and theatre maker Marja van Trier, a specialist in theatre in landscape history became intrigued by them. She is not the first. For more than 200 years, people have wondered why there are so many Peperstraten and written articles about it. The Dongen Local History Circle invited her to talk about this.

More than 100 historical Pepper names Marja van Trier found and visited in the Netherlands. Most of these street names existed before the VOC was founded. In Flanders, there were even Peperstraten as early as the 12th century. The many publications that preceded her story will be reviewed by Marja in the lecture. An important discovery Marja van Trier made about those historical Peperstraten was that they mostly ran from the waterfront to the centre of town or village. So a connection with transport by water was definitely there. In the first part of her lecture, Marja van Trier shows the path taken to arrive at a whole new interpretation of the old names. The second part focuses on the Dongen area.
