
Nol Kleijngeld on the Langstraters
On Wednesday 16 November next, former mayor Kleijngeld of Waalwijk will give a lecture on Langstraters for the Heemkundekring Dongen. Langstraters describes the history of a region. In order to survive, residents battled the water for centuries. For hundreds of years, De Langstraat, border region between Brabant and Holland and thus usually a battleground in wartime. As the cradle of the Dutch leather and shoe industry, De Langstraat has alternately experienced glory times and crises. A shared history has made De Langstraat a unity. The author turns a complicated history into a fascinating story. He alternates personal, historical and administrative perspectives. He extends some lines into the present day. Drs. A.M.P. (Nol) Kleijngeld was born in Waalwijk in 1953. He studied history in Tilburg and Nijmegen. He taught history at the RK School voor Huishoud- en Nijverheidsonderwijs and the Dr. Mollercollege in Waalwijk and later at the Pauluslyceum in Tilburg. In 1995, he became an alderman in Waalwijk. After a mayoralty in North Limburg, he returned to De Langstraat in 2007 to become mayor in his hometown.
