A miller blows with all the winds

The folklorist Hans van den Broek regularly came across things related to the miller's profession during his research in former medicine and folklore. Coincidentally, he had interviewed several Deurn millers about their work for the local history society some years ago. In his story, he will share with you the recurring discussions about the level of the grinding wage, the honesty of the miller, the desired water level at a water mill or why mills turn counterclockwise. He talks about the rise of the windmill and whether or not a mill should or should not be located outside the city. And also why neighbourhoods with mills were sometimes not well known. In addition, he shares excerpts from songs and rhymes about millers and the preference for the 'colour' white. You will also hear fun facts about the language that comes from the world of mills, professional illnesses and accidents, millers' clothing, grain cleaning, how important the weather is, the language of the sails, the patron saints of millers and, finally, wise counsel. As you can see, a varied presentation with a nice insight into what went on around a mill with many unknown and fun facts. Fun? Curious? Come and watch and listen to this lecture.
