IVN nature walk Markdal
On Sunday 22 March, the nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge, in cooperation with Vereniging Markdal, will organise a walk through the Markdal to show you the space for water.
The landscape of the Markdal is a typical stream valley landscape, with an originally meandering stream with marshy banks. In several places along the banks were higher sand humps, the donks. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Mark was canalised to allow faster water drainage. This was beneficial for agriculture, but not for nature.
At the beginning of the 21st century, it was decided to restore the natural course of the Upper Mark. Around 2004, meanders were restored to the river course in the northern part (Bieberg).
On 22 March, World Water Day, we, the IVN and the Markdal Association, want to celebrate that the river Mark will now get even more space. The weir at Koekelberg will disappear and a wetland will be created there. The nature area will be expanded and the Brabantse Delta water board wants to improve the ecological water quality. In this way, we hope that the Markdal will become even more attractive for birds and other animals. DNA research has shown that the otter has already visited the area.
A spring walk through this wet natural gem is a true delight, but where water gets more space, it is better to wear boots or waterproof shoes.
Registration is possible until the day of the walk. After registration, you will receive information about the departure point.
The walk starts at 13:30 and lasts until about 15:30.
