Merske Wortel-Kolonie | More information after registration

On Saturday 11 July, the ‘Merkske Wortel-Kolonie’ landscape walk will take place, led by the IVN’s nature guides. The theme of this walk is: in the footsteps of the vagrant. The walk is approximately 11 kilometres long and follows the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The area is unique and varied. This is because it was not redeveloped for agriculture after the Second World War. As a result, the landscape has remained natural and diverse. You’ll walk past flower-filled fields, small grasslands, woods, winding paths and wetlands teeming with birds. You’ll also see fens, hedgerows and wooded banks. The Merkske stream meanders through the area. This route has previously been voted the most beautiful walk in the province of Antwerp. Wortel-Kolonie has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021 and has a remarkable history. In the early 19th century, the area was designated to combat poverty. Poor families from the city were given the chance to start a new life here. Later, vagrants and beggars were forced to work here. The colony remained in existence until the end of the last century, when the law against vagrancy was abolished. The Merkske stream valley has always remained in its natural state. The stream still meanders through the landscape. This provides plenty of space for plants and animals. It is a peaceful and unique nature reserve. The organisers have a few tips for participants. It can be marshy along the Merkske, especially after rain. You should therefore wear waterproof shoes. Also, bring plenty of food and drink, as lunch will be eaten outdoors along the way. Binoculars are useful, as you’ll be passing through an area with plenty of meadow birds. Don’t forget to bring valid ID, as part of the walk takes place in Belgium.

Registration for the walk is compulsory and can be done right up until the day of the walk. After registering, participants will receive details of the meeting point. Further information and the registration form can be found on the IVN Mark en Donge website. The walk starts at 10.00 and lasts until around 15.00.
