IVN End-of-year plant hunt
On Saturday 31 December, IVN Mark & Donge's nature guides will go in search of flowering plants. Lugging your Christmas groceries, you may sometimes, between the stones of a cluttered car park, suddenly come across a pretty, frilly, pink flower: roberts herb. Even during the darkest days of the year, you may just be treated to a mayflower, as the daisy is also called. Every now and then, in the middle of a winter day, a world opens up to you.
This year, Floron, Floristic Research Netherlands, is organising the end-of-year plant hunt for the eighth time. All over the Netherlands, plant lovers go in search of flowering plants. People are curious to know how many different plants are still in bloom then and which flowering plant is seen the most. IVN Mark & Donge has been part of this for years.
The expectation is to find quite a few this winter. These include species that manage to prolong flowering a little when no serious night frost occurs, or species that can be found flowering all year round. If the weather is really good, spring bloomers are already showing themselves in sunny and sheltered places.
