IVN End-of-year plant hunt

Saturday 31 December 2022
13:30 - 16:00
IVN Mark & Donge

On Saturday 31 December, IVN Mark & Donge’s nature guides will be on the lookout for flowering plants. Whilst lugging your Christmas shopping, you might suddenly come across a beautiful, delicate, pink little flower amongst the stones of a cluttered car park: the winter daisy. Even during the darkest days of the year, you might just be treated to a little May flower, as the daisy is also known. Every now and then, right in the middle of a winter’s day, a whole new world opens up before you.

This year, Floron, the Dutch Floristic Research Organisation, is organising the end-of-year plant hunt for the eighth time. All across the Netherlands, plant enthusiasts are setting out in search of flowering plants. People are keen to find out how many different plants are still in bloom and which flowering plant is spotted most often. IVN Mark & Donge has been taking part in this event for years.

We’re expecting to find quite a few this winter. These include, for example, species that manage to prolong their flowering period in the absence of severe night frost, or species that flower all year round. If the weather is really on our side, spring-flowering plants may already be appearing in sunny, sheltered spots.

We’re curious to see what this winter has in store! Are you too? Then come and help with the plant hunt! A lot will depend on the temperatures in December. The walk starts at 1.30 pm and lasts between one and a half and two hours. If you’d like to join us, you’ll need to register in advance using the button below. Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive further details about the meeting point. Enjoy the walk!
