Geocache "The Scare of de Baronie"
Fun activity for this May holiday? Discover the geocache "The Scare of de Baronie"
During the past corona period, getting together for a fun lecture or group activity was unfortunately not possible. For that reason, on 17 April 2021, with the help of Heemkundekring de Heerlyckheit Dongen, the geocache "De schrik van de Baronie" went live.
What is geocaching?
Geocaching is the world's greatest treasure hunt. During a hike (or bike ride), using puzzles and the like, you search for certain locations via GPS coordinates. You do this using a GPS device or your smartphone. The coordinates are often in beautiful or special places, or the GPS tour tells a special story or provides interesting background information about an area or place. At the end of each tour, you find a treasure (the cache). Worldwide, there are now thousands of hidden treasures.
The geocache "De schrik van de Baronie" is a 6-kilometre, 3-hour exciting GPS tour that leads you through the outskirts of Dongen, telling a special story with historical background information. A special feature of this tour is that it mostly uses QR signs, giving you a modern way of taking in texts, images, sound clips and puzzles.
This geocache is popular
Since going live, the geocache has been popular with Dongen residents and non-Dongen residents alike. This is evidenced by the fact that this geocache has been walked 127 times and received a "favourite" 64 times. The latter means that an extra rating has been given from geocachers. Read some comments from geocachers here:
"What an honour to crawl into the role of the bailiff. We took our task seriously and completed all the tasks as best we could, all to solve the mystery. A delightful, educational, walk. Heemkundekring Dongen, thank you, we enjoyed it."
"I enjoyed the beautiful route, the fun puzzles, the story. I found the final location very special! Kudos to the Heemkundekring Dongen for this beautifully executed geocache."
"Funny how you are drawn into the story here. Also very nice to get some extra information about certain places and history. Nice ending location."
"What a beautiful cache, all in style, interesting facts, varied puzzles."
"Super put together, quite a lot of work went into this. At the end, we were lucky to have a member of the local history society at the final location who knew all sorts of things about the building, including what a roof structure looked like and how it used to be made. Was that lucky!"
