Lecture: The nobility in North Brabant 1814-1918 at the Cammeleur in Dongen
The Heerlyckheit Dongen Local History Society has invited Klaasje Bouma to give a lecture based on her doctoral thesis ‘The Nobility in North Brabant 1814–1918’. The lecture consists of two parts. In the first part, Klaasje outlines the background and context against which the nobility in North Brabant emerged. This part begins with an introduction to the nobility of the Kingdom, addressing the following questions: Why? How? What? and End? We will then zoom in on North Brabant and see how the royal nobility took shape in this province. The second part of the lecture focuses on the life of the nobility. This includes, for example, the role played by marriage and the resulting marital networks, or how they socialised with one another in associations and clubs. Some of the nobility in our province can be classified as the landed gentry, and there is plenty to say about the life of the Brabant landed gentleman as a hunter, a local or regional ‘lord’, or the occupant of his house and estate. This part of the talk does not have a ‘fixed’ content but is adapted as much as possible to the venue where the talk is held, so that, where possible, local and regional members of the nobility feature in the story. You are most welcome to attend this lecture, which will be held on Tuesday 18 July at the Cammeleur. It starts at 8.00 pm; admission is free for members, whilst non-members pay €2.
