The Ox Goor
Hidden in the Chaamse Bossen is the beautiful fen the Ossengoor (goor=dry), which has long been used as a pasture, but has now been flooded for years. Flora and fauna change as a result, as vanished plant species return. As do water birds, dragonflies and damselflies that feel at home in the shallow water. The fen can be reached via the Geuzenpad (sandy path) in Gilze. You cross the Nieuwe Maastrichtsebaan (asphalt) and walk into the forest. About 300 metres further on the left is the Ossengoor. Do put on boots or waterproof shoes.
Putven
The Chaamse Bossen are heathland reclamation forests. The Putven is a remnant of one of the fens, which was too deep to be reclaimed. In this fen, the youth learned to swim in the 1950s and 1960s. Before then - when the fen was still connected via ditches to the Chaamse beken - it still contained eel. Putven can be reached via Chaam (Alphensebaan / Putvenweg). A number of hiking trails lead you to this fen. Deer, pheasants and rabbits can be seen around the Putven.
