Baarle consists of the Dutch municipality of Baarle-Nassau and the Belgian municipality of Baarle-Hertog. A village, unique in its duplicity: two municipalities with two mayors and two schools. But with one population, which, with its two nationalities, goes hand in hand. Baarle has a lively centre with many shops, restaurants and terraces. During your visit, without realising it, you cross the border dozens of times!
30 Enclaves
It is often thought that Baarle lies exactly on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, with the border running through one street. However, this is not correct because in Baarle there is an enclave situation. An enclave is a piece of territory completely surrounded by territory of another state. What makes Baarle so unique is that there is not just one enclave; there are 30 in total!
