Open Monuments Day: St Anthony the Abbot’s Church in Chaam

Sunday 13 September 2026
13:30 - 17:00
Antonius Abbot church in Chaam

A unique opportunity on Sunday afternoon, 13 September, to take a look inside the churches of Alphen, Chaam and Riel. Free admission, with an exhibition or guided tour available to explore at your leisure.
Whether you’re Catholic or not, old or young, grew up here or have just moved to our villages: come and have a look inside these beautiful buildings and learn more about the history and art within the churches. Unfortunately, these churches are no longer open to the public very often, and all three are currently being considered for alternative uses. This is therefore a rare opportunity to admire this heritage whilst you still can – make the most of it!

In Chaam, the Roman Catholic church is open to the public with a photographic exhibition marking the past 100 years of its history. There are plenty of atmospheric photos of the building and its large tower, as well as of volunteers, parishioners and priests. Wherever you are in Chaam, you can’t miss this iconic building. Have you ever been inside? Lots of new photos have been added, so if you’ve already been this summer during the open church days, why not pop in again!

St Anthony the Abbot’s Church: This relatively new church, built in 1926, did not survive the war unscathed. The church tower was blown up by the Germans in October 1944. Compensation was paid for the war damage and the church (and tower) were rebuilt in a slightly different style.
Inside the church is a beautiful wooden statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot (with the pig), thought to date from the fifteenth century, a pulpit by the sculptor H. Peters Ditvoort, and a painted Stations of the Cross originating from the Beguinage in Turnhout. To mark its 100th anniversary, a special exhibition has been organised. Do pop in for a look – no obligation!
