Walk through the past at Museum De Looierij in Dongen
Free walk along Dongen's leather past.
On Sunday 24 September, Museum De Looierij is organising a free walk for individual visitors. An experienced guide will lead you past the heritage of Dongen's leather past.
Start
The walk starts at Museum De Looierij and continues through Kerkstraat, Heuvelstraat and Heuvel. Dongen was known for leather making for a long time. Much of this has now disappeared, but remarkably, it is still visible in the streetscape.
On this walk, you'll see where leather was once made. From old home tanneries, traditional tanneries to modern leather factories.
You pass former manufacturers' villas and the small river Donge, which was indispensable for the tanneries. Moreover, you walk through the oldest part of Dongen, where the village once arose and hear stories about colourful inhabitants of the past, such as Kroeta, the Brothers of Dongen and "The Scare of de Baronie".
